June 5, 2011 The Crazy Horse Memorial & the Historic Town of Deadwood

The Crazy Horse Memorial, located in the Black Hills, is a massive mountain carving dedicated to Crazy Horse, the legendary Lakota warrior who fought against U.S. forces to protect his people’s land and way of life. The memorial is still under construction and, when completed, will be the largest sculpture in the world.

Deadwood

Deadwood is a historic town nestled in the Black Hills, famous for its Wild West heritage. Established in 1876 during the Black Hills Gold Rush, it quickly became a bustling mining town and a hotspot for outlaws, gamblers, and legends like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Today, Deadwood is a National Historic Landmark, preserving its rich history through well-maintained 19th-century architecture, museums, and reenactments. We spent a bit of time wondering the streets, checking out the famous places like the Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon No. 10 where Wild Bill Hickok was killed. We also wandered through the Mount Moriah Cemetery, where Wild Bill and Calamity Jane among others, are interred.
