We made it to Tillamook
We settled in at the Pleasant Valley Campground about 6 miles outside of town. A ‘pleasant’ place with hundreds of rabbits everywhere! Everywhere you look outside there’s rabbits of every colour and description! We took a quick tour into town to scope it out and back to the camp to start our Enchilada preparation! Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!
We spent another day in Tillamook. It rained like stink last night and was supposed to be much the same today but we lucked out and it broke up enough to get out and do some sightseeing. We took a lovely drive from the town out towards the coast through the towns of Netarts & Oceanside Beach. Some amazing HUGE beaches there that seem to go on forever! Huge surf as well and lots of sea arches to look at.
We carried on to Cape Meares and took the short hike down to the lighthouse.
Just beautiful! The ocean is really magnificent here … so wild and untamed! We also hiked a short way to see Munson Creek Falls which is the largest (in height) waterfall on the coast at 319 feet. The short hike there is through typical west coast rain forest … I felt like I was inside an Emily Carr painting! Very nice. Met some people there from Detroit of all places!
Along the road to Tillamook from Pleasant Valley Campground we saw a huge herd of Roosevelt Elk grazing along side of the road.
We stopped in for a self-guided tour of the Tillamook Creamery (cheese factory) … (when in Tillamook …). It’s basically a tourist trap and boy do they trap them! They have a ‘self-guided tour’ where you can look through glass down to the floor and watch them cutting, wrapping and packaging cheese. Ok if you’re really into cheese! On the main floor is a couple of very large gift shops and shops that sell CHEESE, fudge and billions of gallons of ice cream!
We also visited the Tillamook Air Museum, The museum is located at a former U.S. Navy Air Station and housed in a former blimp hangar, known as “Hangar B”, which is the largest clear-span wooden structure in the world.
We picked up a bunch of brochures and will head back to the RV to plan where to go next … and to start cooking our ‘big rib dinner’! With that and the left over enchiladas … we’ll have enough to eat without having to cook for several days! Perfect if we’re going to do some dry camping next.
