BOYA LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK, BC
We left Whitehorse early and drove east. We stopped for a night at a Yukon Territorial campground on a buggy creek, then onwards and southwards! Some of the Alaska Highway was under construction making for some incredibly dusty conditions and near visibility!
We arrived early at Boya Lake Provincial Park and scooped a campsite right on the lake! This lake is the most beautiful body of water I’ve ever seen! I don’t even know how to describe it! It’s not blue … not green. Is it turquoise? Aqua-marine? The water is so clear you can see down to the white bottom 20’ down. As the water gets deeper so does the colour, changing from aqua to the deepest blue. We stayed here 3 nights and paddled each day. It’s a large lake with myriad inlets and islands … tons of beaver damns and lodges.
It is a Provincial Park with no services which is fine so conservation of water is essential. We could use lake water for washing dishes and boiled in our coffee so it’s not a huge hardship. But after a few days you feel like you could really use a ‘whole body’ wash. I opted for a pot of heated lake water and a bar of soap while standing in the shower. It worked pretty good but alas I couldn’t really wash my hair. Bruce opted for a ‘lake wash’! The lake wasn’t as cold as we’d been in lately and while not balmy … it was acceptable. I wish I wasn’t such a wuss … but since I can’t swim I’d be freezing my butt off standing in the shallows and that’s just not fun. But I made do with what I had … and that’s what boondocking is all about!
The water colour at Boya Lake is amazing alternating between deep blues to aqua marine and is a result of the marl bottom and varies depending on the sky and the wind. The paddling is amazing with the water so colourful and lake is so interesting with a very convoluted shoreline making for great exploration!
We stayed here 4 days and 3 nights and loved it completely! We met some great people that we’d run into before at West Bay and had one enjoyable evening with them and another couple – Anders & Liz Treiberg, (www.WeDiscoverCanadaAndBeyond.ca), and Brigitte & Franz Birchler,(www.birchlerstour.blogspot.com, who started in South America have been traveling for almost a year now on their way north to Alaska.
In closing … I must say that this was and probably be … the high point of our trip. For us it was the best camping, paddling and relaxing spot we’ve ever been to! I’m sure we’ll go back again!
